Method overview

The SOMBER Framework™ helps you understand what is happening.

The REBUILD Method™ helps you answer:

  • What needs to change?

  • What pattern is keeping me here?

  • What standard do I want to live by?

  • What structure will support that standard?

  • How will I demonstrate progress?

  • How do I continue when motivation changes?

The process is not about recreating your old life exactly as it was. It is about deliberately building a life that reflects your present needs, values, capacity and direction.

The seven stages

R — Regulate First

Create enough emotional and physical capacity to make a considered decision.

Before developing a major plan, identify whether you need to:

  • Pause

  • Rest

  • Eat or hydrate

  • Reduce immediate stimulation

  • Delay a non-urgent response

  • Clarify what is actually required

  • Seek appropriate support

A plan created during extreme urgency may focus on escaping the feeling rather than addressing the problem.

Stage outcome: Sufficient capacity to begin thoughtfully.

E — Examine the Pattern

Look beyond the individual incident.

Ask:

  • What keeps happening?

  • What usually occurs before this?

  • What emotion, belief or circumstance contributes?

  • What do I typically do next?

  • What short-term relief does that behaviour provide?

  • What is the longer-term consequence?

This stage replaces vague self-criticism with specific pattern recognition.

Stage outcome: A clearly described pattern rather than a global judgement about yourself.

B — Build the Standard

Decide what you want your behaviour and life to represent.

A useful standard is:

  • Clear

  • Behavioural

  • Realistic

  • Within your control

  • Connected to your values

For example:

  • “I respond to essential correspondence within two working days.”

  • “I do not make relationship decisions during immediate emotional urgency.”

  • “I keep promises to myself small enough to maintain.”

  • “I ask for accurate information instead of assuming the worst.”

Stage outcome: A personal standard that can guide action.

U — Use Structure

Make the desired behaviour easier to repeat.

Structure may include:

  • A routine

  • Checklist

  • Calendar reminder

  • Prepared script

  • Environmental change

  • Boundary

  • Spending plan

  • Weekly review

  • Reduced number of commitments

Self-trust becomes difficult to rebuild when every action depends on memory, motivation or mood.

Stage outcome: A practical system supporting the new standard.

I — Integrate the Lesson

Identify what the experience has taught you without allowing it to define your entire identity.

Ask:

  • What did this reveal about my needs?

  • What warning signs will I recognise earlier?

  • What will I do differently?

  • What strength or skill have I developed?

  • What does this experience not prove about me?

Integration means carrying the useful lesson forward while releasing inaccurate or harmful conclusions.

Stage outcome: Learning that informs future decisions.

L — Lead Yourself

Choose the next action because it aligns with your values—not only because you feel motivated.

Self-leadership includes:

  • Making considered decisions

  • Accepting appropriate responsibility

  • Protecting your capacity

  • Maintaining boundaries

  • Asking for help when necessary

  • Returning to the plan after interruption

  • Prioritising long-term self-respect over short-term emotional relief

Stage outcome: Greater consistency between values, decisions and behaviour.

D — Demonstrate Change

Create visible evidence of progress.

Demonstrated change may look like:

  • Completing previously avoided administration

  • Responding differently to a familiar trigger

  • Maintaining a minimum routine

  • Keeping a boundary

  • Communicating more clearly

  • Following a financial plan

  • Returning to a task after a setback

  • Making one decision from self-respect rather than fear

Change becomes believable when it is observable and repeatable.

Stage outcome: Concrete evidence that rebuilding is occurring.

Example rebuilding journey

Starting point

A woman has experienced a destabilising period. Her routines have disappeared, administration has accumulated and she no longer trusts herself to follow through.

She repeatedly creates large plans, becomes overwhelmed and abandons them.

Applying REBUILD

Regulate First

She stops trying to repair every part of life in one night and focuses on sleep, food and one urgent responsibility.

Examine the Pattern

She recognises that shame leads her to create unrealistic recovery plans. When she cannot maintain them, the shame increases.

Build the Standard

She chooses: “I make plans that reflect my actual capacity.”

Use Structure

She creates a weekly essentials list containing no more than three priority actions.

Integrate the Lesson

She recognises that discipline is not punishing herself. Useful discipline creates enough structure to keep moving during difficult periods.

Lead Yourself

She completes the weekly review even when she does not feel especially motivated.

Demonstrate Change

Over four weeks, she completes essential administration, rebuilds a basic morning routine and keeps the commitments she makes to herself.

The transformation

From: “I keep failing at getting my life together.” To: “I use realistic structure to keep rebuilding.”

Evidence of progress

Customers do not need to “feel completely healed” to demonstrate progress

How it connects to the Six Pillars

The REBUILD Method™ primarily supports the Rebuild pillar, while drawing on the other stages of the customer journey.

  • Stabilise: Create enough capacity to begin.

  • Secure: Organise practical foundations.

  • Regulate: Respond rather than immediately react.

  • Rebuild: Restore identity, routine, confidence and structure.

  • Rise: Turn demonstrated change into forward momentum.

  • Thrive: Maintain the structures supporting long-term growth.
